The return of the mixtape.
No elaborate mixing apart from smooth changes from one track to the next.
Cloudspeaker Vol. XXIII is titled ‘BlackStarSpeaker’ because the featured tracks are inspired by the BFI Black Star series on show at the Queen’s Film Theatre where I’ve been working over the last months. The Black Star series celebrates the range, versatility and power of black actors, and with this volume, I wanted to do the same for black musicians. It includes music by artists from France, Jamaica, Nigeria and (mostly) the US [in alphabetical order].
Jon Batiste & Stay Human – Humanism (Redux); Keziah Jones – Sinnerman (Nina Simone Cover); MC Solaar – Quand le soleil devient froid; Spearhead with Michael Franti – Positive; Gang Starr – Jazz Thing; Meshell Ndegeocello – Oysters; Prince – Avalanche; Grace Jones – I’m Crying (Mother’s Tears); Lauryn Hill – Mr Intentional (Unplugged); Maceo Parker feat. Prince – Pass The Peas (The J.B.’s Cover); Bonus Track: Eddie Murphy – Jimmy’s Rap
Total time 40.35. Created on December 15, 2016, at Casa Limone in South Belfast.
Inspired by a friend I compiled a list of my top ten tracks of the last decade – which took me longer than I expected. I picked tracks of ten musicians or bands that impressed me over the last ten years and eventually had to add a bonus track to fit it all in. The result was Cloudspeaker Vol. 1. So far, two volumes feature tracks chosen by friends of mine. Get in touch if you’d like your very own Cloudspeaker featuring your recent or all time top ten.
